Position Overview

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:   This is skilled work involving responsibility for efficient and workmanlike performance of a variety of carpentry tasks and various jobs requiring thorough knowledge of the trade.  Specific instructions are received regarding what tasks are to be performed and how to perform them.  Does related work as required. 

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

Rough carpentry construction, demolition, installation and repair including framing, wallboard, flooring , doors and windows specifically for Carpenters at MHA;

Repairs cabinets, desks, chairs, tables and other office equipment;  

Repairs doors, window frames, floors, stair rails, machinery guards; 

Replaces windows, glass and cords; 

Sands and refinishes floors, desks, woodwork, chairs and tables;

Operates woodworking machinery such as lathes, planers, borers, rip, cross cut, hand and jig saws, miter saw, circular saw, table saw, aluminum brake;

Constructs, repairs, and refinishes a variety of wood articles;

Maintains carpentry tools in good condition; 

Build forms for concrete work, level and float concrete footers and walks;

Does concrete work when necessary; 

Constructs work from plans and specifications; 

Finish carpentry, construction and repair including cabinets, doors, windows, walls and floors; 

Installation of siding, insulation, sheathing, joists, studs, rafters, stairs specifically for Carpenters at MHA; 

Erection and removal of scaffolding, roof jacks and other support and safety equipment specifically for Carpenters at MHA; 

Performs a variety of related duties as necessary and as requested.

REQUIRED  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES and PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:  Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology, and accident precautions of the trade; ability to work from plans and specifications; ability to follow rough sketches and oral instructions; ability to operate common woodworking machinery;  ability to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions;  mental alertness; good judgment; neatness; accuracy; tact and courtesy.  Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, INCLUDING SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. Graduation from High School or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma and two (2) years of experience as a carpenter; OR 
  2. An equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to indicate the ability to do the work.  

For the Municipal Housing Authority, a skilled Senior Crew will evaluate the candidate prior to any offer of employment.  The candidate will need to be successful in a skilled assessment test of their abilities.  The performance of the candidate will continue to be monitored during the probationary period.

maintained throughout employment.
