MAINTENANCE LABORER/MECHANIC

 

*This is a temporary position, with the potential to become permanent. Permanent employment is a civil service position, and the candidate must be a resident of the City of Utica.

 

NOTE: A hands-on skills assessment will be administered to all candidates, and a Senior Crew member will evaluate the candidate prior to any offer of employment. The outcome of the assessment will determine starting pay and title, but most candidates will start at the laborer level. The performance of the candidate will continue to be monitored during the probationary period, and promotional opportunities may be presented.

· $17.81 - $19.13/hr.

· M-F, 7:30am - 4:30pm

· 40 hours per week

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The individual in this position performs a variety of skilled repair tasks in connection with the maintenance and repair of all public buildings, grounds, equipment, and automotive equipment. This work involves responsibility for the skillful performance of a variety of repair tasks. Incumbents work under the general supervision of a higher-ranking mechanic or a supervisor with responsibilities of maintenance and repair activities. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

· Make periodic inspections of properties.

· Makes electrical, plumbing and heating repairs.

· Cleans, repairs, and adjusts oil burners and related equipment, pneumatic and electric temperature control devices, and ventilating equipment.

· Performs carpentry, painting, masonry, roofing, tiling, locksmithing, and other mechanical work.

· Maintains and cares for landscaped areas.

· Estimates materials required for repairs.

· Keeps daily time and material records.

· Reads utility meters.

· Requisitions supplies.

· Uses judgment and experience in making decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.

· Snow plowing and sanding.

· Performs a variety of other skilled work and other related duties as necessary.

 

REOUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of the practices, processes, tools and materials used in the maintenance of buildings and their mechanical, electrical, and sanitary equipment; skill and aptitude as a general mechanic; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to get along well with others; honesty; initiative; good judgment; physical strength; neat appearance; good physical condition. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

 

(A) Graduation from High School or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma issued by the New York State Department of Education (or international equivalent) and two (2) years of satisfactory experience in general building maintenance or building trades.

 

OR

 

(B) An equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to indicate the ability to do the work.

 

(C) A valid NYS Driver’s License is required at the time of permanent appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
